FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you have a question that is not answered here? Feel free to contact andy@cutawaybikecamp.com with any additional questions.

How do I register for the camps? . . .

Registration for the Junior Mountain Bike and Youth Mountain Bike Camps is done through BikeReg.com. You will find links to the registration pages throughout the website, or click here for Junior Race and Travel Camp registration and here for Youth Weekend and Weekday Camp registration.

When does registration open? . . .

Registration opens on BLACK FRIDAY of each year (day after Thanksgiving).

How old do I need to be to attend the camps? . . .

The overnight Junior Race and Travel Camps are for boys and girls ages 13 to 18. Turning 13 just after the camp or 19 just before? Contact us, but this is typically not a problem. IF YOU ARE UNDER 13, CHECK OUT THE YOUTH DEVO CAMP! The Youth Devo camps are for fun-loving youngsters ages 7 to 12. To encourage participation with as little pressure as possible, the weekend-long day caps have dedicated dates for girls and boys.

What do I need to bring to the camps? . . .

As camp dates approach, we send a comprehensive list of all the items to pack to registered campers. In general, plan on the cycling basics such as your bike, helmet, cycling shoes, cycling kits, tubes, and water bottles. Those attending the overnight camps will also need toiletries and bedding for a twin size mattress. Make sure that your bike has been fully serviced and is ready to ride at least one week before camp.

What are the accommodations like for overnight camps? . . .

Campers stay on the Miller School of Albemarle campus, utilizing the dormitories, dining hall, and numerous other facilities. Rooms are much like college dorms with a twin sized bed, dresser, and wardrobe for each person. Depending on the school’s schedule, CBC will either be using dorms in Old Main (3-4 per room) or Wayland (individual rooms).

What is the food like? . . .

Campers will enjoy 3 full meals a day (just lunch for Youth Devo Camps) along with healthy snacks and ride food. Prepared by our own phenomenal kitchen staff, good health and quality nutrition are a major part of our mission, so campers can count on delicious and balanced food options. Have a food allergy? Not a problem. Please contact us at least two weeks before camp and we will take care of the rest.

How much supervision is there? . . .

Camps are supervised by professional educators with significant experience working at independent boarding schools. While all camps offer a large amount of freedom, attendees never are completely unattended. There is always at least 1 instructor to every 5 campers out on rides, and for the overnight camps, there are always counselors in the dormitories. With the numerous resources Miller School of Albemarle provides, boys and girls room on separate floors and have dedicated bathrooms during the coed camps. We also have a scheduled lights-out time, although after full days of riding along with other activities, compliance is rarely a problem!

What if I register and find out later I cannot make the camp? Do you issue refunds? . . .

We understand things come up and registered campers sometimes need to change their plans. We do offer a full refund (minus the small percentage BikeReg.com charges for each registration) until one month before camp begins. Inside one month, we offer a 50% refund until two weeks before camp, at which time we can no longer issue refunds. Contact us and we can typically refund your registration in the same manor you made payment.

How much cycling experience do I need to attend the camps? . . .

It depends on the camp that you plan to attend. Each has specific skill level and experience leve requirements. This information is provided on each camp page under "quick facts."

Junior Race Camp is for intermediate to advanced riders. Campers do not need race experience, but they should be comfortable and competent riding on single track trails. Attendees of race camp must have the fitness to ride for several hours every day.

Junior Travel Camp is for advanced riders between the ages of 13-18. This camp involves all-day adventures and big-mountain riding. High fitness and skill levels are required to complete rides and remain with assigned groups. While high-level race experience is not required, all riders must have the fitness to ride 3-4 hours per day at a moderately high pace over challenging, technical terrain. This camp is not for beginners. Feel free to call us if you have questions about your ability level. We begin each day riding as a group, and then split up into smaller groups depending on how everyone is feeling.

Youth Weekday Travel Bike Camp is for beginner to intermediate-level riders; campers should be confident handling their bikes.

Youth Devo Weekend Camps are for true beginner through intermediate-level riders. Time is spent covering the most basic aspects of proper cycling before advancing to more challenging terrain and skills.
